Case study · Oleon

A chemical plant you can walk through from a browser

Oleon produces oleochemicals across multiple sites. For their site in Ertvelde, we captured 23 locations in 360° and linked them into a single tour their teams now use for recruitment, sales, onboarding and more.

Behind the scenes

Two days on site, then the build

  1. 01

    on site with the crew

Walking every department with an HSE officer, inside the site's own safety rules.

  2. 02

    Shooting the panorama

Setting up the 360° rig on a levelled tripod, capturing multiple exposures at every angle.

  3. 03

    Capturing photo and video

The photos and videos that will become the tour's clickable dots.

  4. 04

    Building a dot

Placing the point a visitor clicks, and what opens in the 360° environment when they do.

  5. 05

    Adding the video dots

Dropping the clips into the scenes they belong to.

  1. 12:16

    Badging in

Visitor hi-vis, hard hats, safety glasses and an escort. From here on, every metre is walked inside the green pedestrian lanes painted across the site.

  2. 12:31

    Up onto the units

Catwalks, steel stairs and gimbal passes along the outdoor pipework. These are the parts of the plant that are hardest to describe and easiest to show.

  3. 13:56

    Lab and control room

The quieter half of the operation: an autosampler running a batch, the control desk, the analysis lab. The rooms candidates never picture when they imagine a chemical plant.

  4. 17:03

    The high ground

Tripod panoramas from the elevated platforms as the light dropped: the tank farm, the pipe racks and the wind turbines on the horizon behind them.

Two Oleon employees in navy overalls, high-visibility jackets and yellow hard hats stand at the railing of an elevated walkway, looking out over the solar array and fields beyond the plant.Looking straight up the side of a tall, cladded distillation column, its horizontal seams narrowing toward the walkways and blue sky at the top.A distillation column and its access platforms rising above the surrounding pipework against a bright, part-clouded sky.Close view of banked process pipework and steelwork on an outdoor rack, pipes running in parallel behind a blue guard rail.An overhead pipe bridge seen from directly beneath, its parallel runs and grated walkway cutting a diagonal across a bright white sky.The Oleon site from above: storage tanks, pipe racks and road tankers in the foreground, with trees, green fields and a village behind it.

One shoot, many uses

Where the tour earns its keep

Recruitment

Candidates see the plant, the roles and the people before they apply, so the first interview starts from a real picture rather than a careers page.

Sales & procurement

Buyers walk the site before the first meeting and arrive already understanding the operation they are being asked to trust.

Onboarding

New hires explore every department in advance, so day one is orientation rather than a tour.

Marketing & content

Individual panoramas, photos and clips are lifted straight out of the tour for posts, presentations, websites and more. One shoot, content for the whole year.

Internal tour

The same tour, securely extended with sensitive processes and internal detail. Built for onboarding, buyer meetings and internal presentations.

Fewer escorted visits

Restricted zones usually need a staff escort, which takes real coordination and time. The tour lets people explore those zones first, remotely.

After the handover

What the project taught us

Scripting the route with the client, stitching fifty frames into one panorama, and getting the whole thing into a live website, in our own words, once it was done.
